Osaka in Autumn: The Best Fall Foliage Spots

Autumn is when Osaka is at its most beautiful. The summer heat lets go in early November, the air turns clear and cool, and the city changes colour: four kilometres of ginkgo going gold above Midosuji, old maples burning red around a still pond behind Tennoji Zoo, the ginkgo at Sumiyoshi Taisha matching the vermilion of the bridge. For one month, a city known for neon and street food becomes a place you walk slowly through, looking up.

Osaka doesn't advertise any of it the way Japan's famous autumn towns do — which turns out to be the good news. The city sits at the tail end of the country's foliage season, turning late November into early December, weeks after the mountains have peaked and the crowds have moved on. Five things worth knowing before you go

Go on a weekday. The same garden that feels like a secret on a Tuesday has a queue at the gate on a Sunday in late November.
The sun sets before five. Gardens take last entry around 16:30 and the illuminations switch on around 17:00 — so do the gardens first, eat, then walk Midosuji. One day, both.
Dress for two temperatures. Mid-teens in the afternoon, single digits once the light goes. A layer you can carry is worth more than a thick coat.
Get an IC card. One tap on every line and every convenience store. A metro day pass pays for itself by the third ride, which is most of these days.
Rain is not a cancellation. Wet maple is deeper red than dry, the crowds thin out, and everything in the section above is five minutes from a covered arcade.
