1. The 10th Vietnam National Games: Opening on the Saigon River
Date: Late November 2026. Competition is scheduled to start around November 20 and run into mid-December. Some sports, such as judo, begin earlier in mid-November.
Price: The riverside opening spectacle is expected to be free to watch from public areas. Entry to individual competitions is usually free or low-cost. Check official channels for any ticketed sessions.
Location: Citywide. The opening ceremony is planned for the open space along the Saigon River. Competitions run at venues across the city, including Phu Tho Indoor Stadium, plus satellite venues in the expanded HCMC area (e.g. Vung Tau).
Scale
About 10,000 athletes, coaches and officials, competing across more than 40 sports. It is the largest domestic sporting event in Vietnam, held this year as part of the city's 50th anniversary under the name Ho Chi Minh City.
What it brings to you
A planned riverside opening ceremony that mixes the Saigon River landscape, its bridges, light, music and technology. The city describes it as a cultural show, not only a sports ceremony.
Free or cheap seats at national-level competition: swimming, athletics, martial arts, team sports and more.
A city in event mode, with fan zones, decorated streets and a festive atmosphere along the District 1 riverfront.
What this means
The city is presenting the Games as more than a sports event. It is a showcase of a modern, confident Ho Chi Minh City in its 50th-anniversary year. Visitors get to see Vietnam cheering for its own athletes, which is loud, proud and very local.
Notes & Tips
The exact opening date and program are usually confirmed close to the event. Follow the HCMC Department of Culture and Sports and local news (Tuoi Tre, Thanh Nien) in the final weeks.
For the riverside opening, good views are on the Thu Duc (old District 2) riverbank looking back at District 1, or from a rooftop near Bach Dang.
Expect road closures around the riverfront on ceremony night. Walking beats Grab.
