From a City Gate into Taipei’s Past and Present
Beimen, officially known as Cheng’en Gate, is one of the few remaining gates of the Qing-era Taipei City—and it still stands on its original site. Before it became a place to visit, this was a true entrance to the city, leading toward the Tamsui River, Dadaocheng, and the world beyond.
Standing in front of Beimen feels strangely calm. Traffic flows, people pass by, yet the gate itself remains quietly in place. The red bricks, stone base, and proportions are largely unchanged, reminding you that Taipei did not become what it is overnight—it was built up slowly, layer by layer.
