1. Autumn Leaves (Koyo): Osaka Castle, Minoo, Expo '70 Park
Date: All month. The color usually peaks in the second half of November.
Price: Most parks are free. Expo '70 Commemorative Park charges a small entry fee. Daisen Japanese Garden light-up is ticketed.
Location:
Osaka Castle Park: moat-lined maples framing the castle tower. City center, low effort.
Minoo Park: a forest trail up to a 33 m waterfall, about 30 minutes from central Osaka by train. Famous for momiji tempura (deep-fried maple leaves).
Expo '70 Commemorative Park (Suita): around 10,000 trees, with an annual Autumn Leaf Festival through November, special tea-house openings and tea ceremonies.
Daisen Japanese Garden (Sakai): evening light-ups on November 14, 21–23 and 27–29, with maples reflected in the pond around the arched Ingetsu-kyo bridge.
What it brings to you
Classic Japanese autumn scenes without traveling to Kyoto.
Seasonal food: momiji tempura in Minoo, plus matsutake mushrooms and crab arriving at Kuromon Market.
Evening light-ups that make the leaves glow after dark.
What this means
Koyo (autumn leaf viewing) is as much a part of Japanese life as cherry blossoms. Families, couples and photographers head out on weekends to watch the season change. Osaka gives you the same experience as Kyoto with fewer crowds and a cheaper dinner afterward.
Notes & Tips
Go early: the best foliage light fades before about 3:30 PM, and sunset comes around 4:45–5:00 PM.
Minoo Park is packed on weekends, so a weekday morning is much calmer.
Watch the long weekend: Labor Thanksgiving Day falls on Monday, November 23, making November 21–23 a three-day weekend with peak crowds.
